Here at The Old Rectory of St James in Telford Shropshire, we do love our grub! And we hope you will too! Shropshire is renowned for good food and we endeavour to provide tasty, mouthwatering meals for our Guests, whether that’s Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Cake or an Evening Meal.

We do acknowledge and cater for, the various dietary needs of visitors; there are increasing numbers of requests for vegetarian dishes and “free from” options e.g  no wheat/gluten, dairy, nuts, etc. Prior notice of allergies or intolerances is always appreciated! For some guests it’s a lifestyle choice, for others it’s a potentially life threatening reaction; whichever it is, we take our Guests requirements seriously and try to be as inventive as possible.

We believe that local fresh ingredients are essential where possible. Local ingredients mean to us, locally grown or reared, not imported and packaged here and labelled “British”. Shropshire and neighbouring counties have a wealth of produce that can be used imaginatively in season. We are gradually finding good local suppliers and adjusting our menus accordingly.  In the long term we want to grow as much as possible ourselves.

Despite the frozen ground, the fruit area of the Rectory garden has been cleared (with the help of the chickens) and the blackcurrants are in bud.  The raspberries are cut down ready to shoot again. The chickens are now laying eggs daily, and the vegetable beds already have onions planted. Pruning in the Rectory Orchard will have to wait another year, but the apple trees were laden last year, so here’s hoping that we will have plenty of fresh fruit for Guests to enjoy at any meal.

We make our own bread by hand, also preserves, jams and marmalade. They are popular and we do run out eventually. This year we are planning to make a lot more to cope with demand.

Come and stay for a weekend and take advantage of our current offer and sample our food for yourselves. You won’t want to go home.
