The free session by FBC Manby Bowdler - Solicitors in Telford takes place at their office in Routh House, Hall Court, Hall Park Way, Telford, on February 16 will focus on the latest developments in employment law and the role of HR in the disciplinary process.

The HR Lunch Club is open to anyone who has to deal with employees at any level, from experienced in-house human resources managers to those with no HR experience. 

Modern slavery, young workers and whistleblowing policies will all be issues on the menu of a free HR Lunch Club hosted by a Shropshire law firm this month.

The meetings offer practical advice in an informal environment and the firm’s Employment Team will also be on hand to answer any questions. 

Topics on the table for discussion include reviewing an employer’s legal obligation in relation to the Modern Slavery Act, practical tips for encouraging an open culture and practical advice on how to manage young workers looking at everything from tailoring the recruitment process, having mentors at work, managing timekeeping and performance issues, social media use and welfare policies such as use of drugs and alcohol.

There will also be advice on how to have an effective whistleblowing policy including the pros and cons of a confidential hotline and protection from victimisation and the practical implications of the role HR takes in the organising and decision making process for disciplinary and grievance hearings.

Employment lawyer Julia Fitzsimmons said: “With Sports Direct in the news again following the imprisonment of two individuals for offences of modern slavery, we will be looking at what employers can do when using agency staff to protect themselves and their workers to guard against abuse of such people.

“This case is typical of the fast moving world of employment law and the Lunch Club is the ideal opportunity for HR professionals to bring themselves up-to-date on the latest developments as well as getting valuable advice.

“People can share valuable tips and real life experiences or raise issues, problems or good practice in the workplace, with a view to increasing their employee engagement and productivity, minimise business costs and generally manage HR and employment tasks more efficiently,” added Julia.
