A family butchers in Telford has double reason to celebrate this week as it marks National Butchers’ Week and the anniversary of when the shop opened almost four decades ago.

G. N. Badley & Sons, in Trench, is celebrating 38 years trading - and about 400 tonnes of sausages made - at Gibbons Road in the town as well as joining in with celebrations for butchers creativity and passion across the UK, which runs until Sunday (MARCH 30).

The butchers was set up by Keith Badley in 1976 who has sadly passed away. It is now run by his wife Kay and son Simon and last month was named the second most loved butchers in the UK as part of a survey run by the Best Of website.

It was also named the third most loved business in Telford.

Mrs Badley said: “It is a real achievement to be open for almost 40 years and it is down to our customers. Keith would be so pleased to know the shop is still thriving and we still have the regulars and locals that rely on us to get their meat for them. I think what has made us such a success is that we have also adapted to the changing needs of customers, since Simon has come on board he has made us one of only three butchers in the area that offer online ordering."

“It means our customer base now spans the UK but in addition we have created a new app to help us trace meat and also a new series of meat boxes that can be delivered to people’s homes. It means we are a 21st century business but we still have our strong family butcher roots which we have stuck to.”

The seventh National Butchers' Week aims to teach the internet generation how to shop for meat and help young people pluck up the courage to pay their high street butcher a visit.

Events will be put on throughout the week to highlight the unique service provided by butcher's shops including the unusual, exciting and often cheap cuts of meat which cannot be found in supermarkets.

G.N. Badley & Sons have been making homemade sausage since they opened but over the years have expanded the range they offer to include 11 different types of sausage. It includes the classic pork and cumberland as well as more adventurous flavours like hot Spanish style.

They have also started offering a range of alternative meats such as crocodile and kangaroo to keep up with demand.

Simon added: “National Butchers Week is a great chance to champion the importance of local family butchers that you can rely on. It is a huge bonus that this coincides with our business anniversary. We really do have a lot to celebrate with all the changes the business has gone through and plans we have in the pipeline to keep up with customer demand and make sure we are offering exactly what suits their needs. I hope everyone takes notice of this week not just here in Telford but across the UK and pays their local butchers a visit.”

As part of the constant improvements G. N. Badley & Son was rebranded with a new logo last month.
