About the Museum
The Museum of Somerset, located within the historic walls of Taunton Castle, tells the story of Somerset from prehistoric times to the modern day. Through interactive displays, fascinating artefacts and hands-on exhibits, the museum brings the county’s rich history to life for visitors of all ages.
Exhibitions cover everything from Roman Somerset and medieval Taunton to rural life, conflict, industry and innovation. Family-friendly galleries make it easy for children to explore, while temporary exhibitions and events ensure there’s always something new to discover.

🚍 Getting There – Public Transport
🚌 By Bus:
Taunton town centre is well served by local and regional bus routes. From Taunton Bus Station, the museum is approximately a 5–10 minute walk through the town centre.
🚉 By Train:
Taunton Railway Station is around a 15-minute walk from Taunton Castle. Taxis are readily available outside the station, or visitors can use local bus services towards the town centre.
🚶 On Foot:
The museum is centrally located and easy to reach on foot from shops, cafés and other town centre attractions.
🚗 By Car:
There is no on-site parking, but several public car parks are available nearby, including Castle Way and Tangier car parks.
