Beautiful pub situated on a busy road so easily findable. Service was fantastic, very friendly and prompt. Food was excellent, I had an aubergine schnitzel which had a really delicious caper butter drizzled on top. Will definitely be returning.

We were regulars at The Fox for many years before it changed hands in 2019. This was our first visit since that change of management: it is now owned by the same company that runs The Crown at Hartest, two restaurants in Bury St Edmunds and one in Ingham. The food is reliable, though, on this showing, it’s not quite what it used to be.

Whilst our mains were prepared we had some piping hot whitebait (surely straight from freezer into fryer) and a pot of olives. For the mains, two of us opted for a salmon steak (which was well cooked, though the meat didn’t fall off the fork, so maybe wasn’t as fresh as it could have been, and the two cuts looked near identical) served on a bed of crushed new potatoes and samphire (a nice touch) with a rather brightly coloured but tasty creamy dill sauce (£16). Another of our party had the lamb burger with skinny fries and coleslaw (£15): a little ordinary, and with not much to accompany the actual burger, bar the meat and some lettuce, and the mayo for the coleslaw didn’t meet with approval (I didn’t taste it so can only report the comment). The most adventurous dish was for our vegetarian who really enjoyed the aubergine Schnitzel (£16) with caper sauce, though the potato salad (which would indeed be traditional in Germany for a Schnitzel) that came with it contained a lot of raw onion, which when overdone, as here, can overpower all else. We also added a side of deep fried courgette: this was under-seasoned but a nice additional touch. Puddings were fine, if (at £8) on the pricy side, so we shared a sticky toffee pudding and a strawberry and cream tart. Drinks, at £7.70 for a 175ml glass of fairly ordinary wine, were also priced slightly on the high side, but we all accept that the margin on drinks (for the Lopez de Haro it looked like a mark-up of nearly 300%) is what keeps bistro-pubs like this alive, so fair’s fair.

Service was led by an experienced young lady who efficiently and cheerfully ran front of house (the restaurant wasn’t especially busy). Décor-wise we weren’t totally won over by the bright yellow blinds on the windows but at least they complemented the sauce around the salmon! That detail aside, the place has a comfortable feel and the staff were enthusiastic and attentive. I agonised whether to give this meal three or four stars, as the food was not quite reliable enough across the board to earn four stars, but the good service just tipped it into the higher category. But only just.

Food took a long time to come. (Wasn’t hugely busy.) The kids portions were truly mean in size. We ordered them again. The bitter beer is good. The waitresses were polite and efficient. It was Sunday but apart from three other meals choices they were ONLY doing roasts. So you know… not exactly ecstatic

Came here for a delicious lunch with my parents and husband. Our waitresses Daisy and Fiona looked after us so well, as did the chef! Everything we ordered was fabulous: onion tarte tatin, smoked haddock scotch egg, sirloin steak, fish & chips, chicken breast special, pork belly, lemon tart and ice cream! Thank you so much. Can’t wait to come back!

Highly recommended! Food delicious, drinks perfectly chilled. Very clean place and wonderful friendly staff. Took my friend for lunch, the sardines on foccacia starter was amazing, same for the pork belly and the steak pie.
