A tea shop that opens for evening meals. It's like the best French meals - a small, carefully considered menu cooked to perfection. My husband had millet with his main course rather than just potatoes or rice, and although I teased him about budgerigar food he said it was absolutely delcious - high praise from him. Everything here tasted fantastic, the portion sizes were just right and it was a very reasonable set price for two or three courses. The staff were welcoming and happy to chat if you wanted them to, otherwise courteous and efficient. The service was neither too fast nor too slow. The tables were far enough apart to give you intimacy if you wanted it but near enough to chat with other diners if you wished to do so. This is no swanky restaurant - go to the Mill if that's your scene - but the Secret Garden certainly served up the best food we ate in Sudbury. I thoroughly recommended it.

Recently we were invited to The Secret Garden by friends and though we found the food was enjoyable our evening was ruined by a manageress/waitress called Kirsti who was very cheekily patronising to my wife. We don't often get this kind of rudeness from restaurant staff but when it happens it can ruin an evening out so we would wish not to return in spite of the food.

Went here for a drink half way around a walk. Very smart pub with a lovely garden and a good range of beer. Didn't try the food but the menu looked good.

Brilliant outdoor dining area with massive space for kids to blow off steam. Great food, on the pricey side but when you factor in the facilities and setting it's actually decent value.

Food babies likely
If you have three courses, generous portions, a bit heavy on deep frying. Or perhaps it was just our choices. But I was relieved the ice cream was not deep fried! Beautiful setting, good service. A little echoing for a large group, as noise can increase off bare walls. Lovely gardens.

Venue great, lovely outside area with lots of picnic tables. Food in general is good,BUT, there isn't any chicken on the menu, as a non red meat eater and the quality of the pork is poor and not really wanting fish for Sunday dinner I found the choose rather limited. But everything else is great, and the young girls serving are polite and efficient.

After a 5.5 mile ramble around Hartest and Somerton on a rainy, windy day in October, my colleague and I were looking forward to lunch. We had been allowed to leave our cars in the pub car park beforehand which was a great help.
On entering the Crown, the first thing I noticed was a roaring fire and a cosy lounging area to the left and then the bar immediately in front of us. This is a very welcoming pub and the layout and decor is excellent. It was not particularly busy during our visit, but I can easily imagine it would be a very popular venue in the evening. The lunch menu is not extensive but nevertheless provides a good variety and I found a number of dishes to my liking. I settled for liver and bacon which was excellent, while my colleague had the steak burger which he enjoyed greatly. Sadly, we both felt too full to indulge in what looked to be some very attractive puddings and settled for a coffee instead.
I have to say the staff were very helpful and attentive and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I feel another ramble coming on, and next time I shall leave room for one of those puddings. I have eaten at a number of country pubs in the last few years and the Crown is definitely up there with the best.
