22nd December, 1917. There is a knock at the door of Millicent Fawcett’s home on Gower Street, Bloomsbury. Lady Ottoline Morrell has crossed from her home at 44 Bedford Square to express her condolences for the loss of a beloved sister. Millicent Fawcett, leader of the suffragists, is about to open the door to the patroness of the Bloomsbury Group. Ottoline’s vast circle of friends includes Prime Ministers and novelists, painters and philosophers. Her world is tainted by the whiff of scandal and the whisper of notoriety. Millicent on the other hand has been unwavering in her dedication to the crusade for women’s suffrage.

Across The Square imagines what might have occurred in an encounter between these two sharply contrasting women from very different worlds.

Each in their own way, Lady Ottoline Morrell and Millicent Fawcett have left an indelible legacy on the our political and cultural landscape yet they have languished too long in the twilight of obscurity, overshadowed by others. In a show full of both laughter and drama, Across the Square seeks to shine a light on these immensely influential women.

Written by international award-winning writer, Non Vaughan-O’Hagan and directed by Alex Pearson, Across the Square had its premiere at the Bloomsbury Festival and a sell-out revival at London’s Jermyn Street Theatre.

Will these two extraordinary women find common ground?

Two differing world views are about to collide over a glass of sherry.
