The Crown in Hartest has long been a comfortable place to eat but it now offers something different. Under new management, the passion is for good quality, locally sourced food.

Each menu is created with seasonal food obtained from producers in the region. Locally sourced ingredients means that the produce is fresh, not having travelled thousands of kilometres, but it also means that a good relationship is built between buyers and producers.

The pork used at The Crown comes from Blythburgh Park where the pigs are free ranging  ensuring flavourful meat. Other meats are sourced from a butcher’s in Bury St Edmunds who always buys his produce locally. The fish is caught off the East Coast and bought from Marr Fish, a company which has recently expanded to cover this area. The haddock is especially good. Game is sourced very locally too.

The chefs make everything in their own kitchens; from mayonnaise through to ice cream and bread, all using locally sourced ingredients.

They even cook with beer from their sister brewery, “brewshed,” based in Bury St Edmunds.

And on top of all that they welcome children and well behaved dogs. The child friendly menu is healthy: it has macaroni with hidden vegetables and half size  portions from the menu are available for children and those with smaller appetites. There is also a children’s activity box and a huge well equipped playground so that children can build up an appetite before eating or burn off those extra calories after overindulging.

For the discerning drinkers craft beers and real ale are served as well as wine from an extensive list. There are always two guest beers from the brewshed and wines from the local awarding winning vineyard, Gifford’s Hall, are very popular.

…….and Wednesday night is Pie & a Pint night. A choice of delicious homemade pies, mashed potato and a pint of Brewshed beer, glass of wine or a soft drink for just £10

It sounds like a place to visit to me.
