The skin around your eyes is very thin and delicate, which means it'll be the area where you're going to experience the first and most visible signs of ageing.
Not only is the skin around your eyes delicate, but the subcutaneous fat tissue in that area loses its plumpness as we grow older, making the ageing eye susceptible to wrinkles caused by our facial movements.
However, there are steps you can take to slow down the damage, as well as repair it.
We all know that smoking is bad for your health anyway, so if you need a better reason for giving up, wrinkles surely have to be a good one. You can tell a lifelong smoker by the fact that their skin is more wrinkled than a non-smoker. That’s because the nicotine causes the blood vessels to narrow just under the surface of the skin, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. If that’s not enough, there are around 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes that will also cause damage to your skin’s collagen and elastin. It’s no wonder your skin doesn’t stand a chance.

As with many aspects of your health - both inside and out - a healthy, balanced diet is crucial.
Iron - those dark circles and bags under your eyes could be caused by an iron deficiency. An iron-rich dietwill help them go away - foods that have lots of iron are red meat, leafy greens, kidney beans, shellfish, soybeans etc.
Salt - water retention can be caused by eating overly salty foods, which in turn makes your eyes look puffy. Cutting down to having a total of just one teaspoon of salt a day will help reduce the puff.
Sprouts - Brussels sprouts are not just for Christmas! Eating sprouts has been found to reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer. They will also help to protect your vision and even your eye colour, and the Vitamin C they contain will help regenerate your skin. Serve them drizzled with olive oil because the healthy fats in the oil will help your body absorb the nutrients.
If you want to retain a youthful look around your eyes, you must moisturise in order to prevent dry skin, which leads to lines and wrinkles. We'd recommend Teamine Eye Complex as a way of dealing with dark circles; if you want to reduce the appearance of lines, use a night-time retinol serum that has been specially designed to use around this delicate area.
And always remember to use a protective SPF to protect your skin from sun damage, especially if you're using a retinol product.
