Seaside Siren Roller Girls present BRAWL AT SEA

THE FIRST LIVE ROLLER DERBY BOUT IN ESSEX

With recent appearances on Daybreak and This Morning – and a Hollywood movie (Drew Barrymore’s Whip It) inspired by the game, roller derby is the all-rocking, all-rolling women’s sport that is sweeping the nation. On Saturday 23 April, the Seaside Siren Roller Girls present BRAWL AT SEA the first ever live roller derby game in Essex at Garon Park Leisure Centre in Southend.

BRAWL AT SEA will be an afternoon of high-octane, action-packed sports entertainment for all the family. Presenting two games for the price of one, the first bout pitches Team Pirates against Team Sailors - two mixed teams comprised of up-and-coming skaters from other leagues across the country. The main event sees home team the Seaside Siren Roller Girls face off against contenders The Norfolk Brawds!

For those who have never seen roller derby before, don’t worry - there will be a demonstration ‘jam’ at the start of the first bout, along with a free programme for all ticket buyers including basic rules and game play – plus staff on hand to answer any questions you might have about the fabulous sport of roller derby. It’s a fast-paced game to watch and is essentially a race to score points taking place on an oval track – with plenty of thrills, spills and tactics thrown in along the way.

The Seaside Siren Roller Girls have been training together since November 2009 and come from all walks of life – students, mothers, wives and professionals – many of whom had never had the opportunity before to become engaged in sport. BRAWL AT SEA is a culmination of a year and a half of hard work learning to play roller derby, recruiting players for the team, working on tactics and raising vital funds to pay for costs. There are currently around 60 teams in the UK alone, with a bout happening somewhere across the country almost every weekend. BRAWL AT SEA will be the first ever bout to take place in Essex.

Doors open at 1pm, with the first game, Pirates vs Sailors taking place at 2.00pm. During the day, you’ll have the chance to peruse stalls from local businesses such as Kim Cannon Studios, Now Voyager, MakeBakeCreate and Must Destroy Jewellery. There’ll also be merchandise available from all the teams participating in the event, including t-shirts, badges and stickers for the Seaside Siren Roller Girls – the perfect way to show your support for your local team! Once the action is over, over-18s can come on down to The Alex (53 Alexandra Street) in Southend to dance the night away at the after party. Entry is free for all ticket-holders.

Tickets are £10.50 for adults and £5.50 for children aged 12 and under – with under 5’s free. For further information and to buy tickets, please see the Seaside Siren Roller Girls website – www.seasidesirenrollergirls.com
