National Grid Gas – main replacement works

Residents are advised that major gas main replacement works will re-commence in central Southend next week.

The gas main which runs along Victoria Avenue from Southend Central Museum to St Mary’s Church was recently renewed by National Grid Gas.

On Monday (9th July) gas main renewal works will re-commence in phased sections along Fairfax Drive as part of the same project.

The works will commence at the junction with Shakespeare Drive before progressing towards Victoria Avenue.

The initial section between Shakespeare Drive and Prittlewell Chase will require a road closure, with a suitable diversionary route in place.

The next section up to the traffic lights at the junction with Victoria Avenue will be possible to complete with lane closures alone.

After reaching the traffic light controlled junction the work will require an excavation in the middle of Victoria Avenue.

At this stage it will be necessary for temporary 3-way lights to be in operation, with the temporary closure of Priory Crescent.

This work, which will take approximately two weeks, will be followed by a Southend-bound lane closure to allow for the new gas pipe to be inserted back towards St Mary’s Church.

In every instance the extent of the works will be kept to a minimum and the least intrusive traffic management system implemented.

Parking provision and normal pedestrian routes will be maintained wherever possible.

The gas main renewal works are scheduled to be completed in early September, with the vast amount of the disruption taking place during the school holidays.

National Grid Gas has agreed to a request from the Council to work extended hours, seven days a week, in order to complete the project as quickly as possible.
