Mark Foster Opens new centenary clubhouse at Thorpe Bay Lawn Tennis Club

One hundred years - almost to the day – since it was formed, Thorpe Bay Lawn Tennis Club celebrated its centenary with the opening of a stunning, new clubhouse (28 April 2012).

The state-of-the-art, £650,000 venue has taken a year to build and was jointly funded by donations from members in partnership with the Essex Lawn Tennis Association.

The honour of opening it fell to Essex multiple Olympian, World, European and Commonwealth swimming champion and World Record Holder Mark Foster.

He spent time playing tennis with junior club members before burying a time capsule and then cutting the ribbon to declare the clubhouse officially open.

Mark said “The whole long term legacy of the Olympics for me is about trying to get people involved in sport, and for facilities and clubhouses like this being built with all these tennis courts enables them to run tennis academies, tennis schools, lessons and fun activities where so many can get involved.”
