Free treats for hungry plants!

Hurry along to the Trust Links May Fayre on Saturday 12th May and pick up a nutritious free gift for your garden!

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s recycling and waste contractor, Cory Environmental, will be giving away free compost to Southend residents at the Fayre - which is being held at the Growing Together Garden in Fairfax Drive, Westcliff - from 11am onwards.

This is to thank residents who have helped recycle as much of their food and garden waste as possible over the last year, and to encourage even more recycling in future.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Team Leader for Waste Management, Imran Kazalbash, said: “As part of international Compost Awareness Week, this is a great opportunity for us to say thank you to residents.

“We know that people in Southend are committed recyclers and their efforts really make a big environmental difference. It is so important that the hard work continues. “

Every household in the borough can request a free food waste kitchen caddy and collection bin from the Council and use it to put their food waste into for weekly collection by Cory.

Garden waste can be recycled just as easily - residents can purchase a garden waste wheeled bin from Cory which is also collected weekly for a small collection permit fee.

Alternatively, if residents only produce a small amount of garden waste, purchasing a roll of garden waste sacks may be a better option, as once residents have registered their address garden waste sacks can be left out for collection as and when they get filled.

Cory is working with EnVar, which makes compost out of Essex’s green waste, to supply compost for the May Fayre giveaway. All you have to do is bring your own bags and spade to shovel some compost into and you can take it home to use in your garden or allotment.

Matt King, Chief Executive of Trust Links, a charity which provides a therapeutic garden for people with mental health issues, welcomed the initiative.

He said: “Trust Links strongly believes in the importance of communities and sees gardening as a great tool to bring people together.

“We’re delighted that EnVar has given us three tonnes of compost to give away to help encourage others to garden too.”

As well as hosting the giveaway the May Fayre has lots of other fun family activities going on during the day.

These include traditional fair games, a maypole, treasure hunt, food stalls, raffle and tombola, as well as band entertainment, tai chi and folk groups.
