Tesco has finally been given the go-ahead to build a new store in Rugeley. The store will be welcomed by many, but its confirmed building will also be the final nail in the coffin for some town traders.
The council has supported the application hoping it will lead to regeneration of the town and offer variety for those shopping in Rugeley, preventing the need to go out of the town.
Councillor Pat Williams, Town Centre Regeneration Leader said "I am delighted with the Secretary of State's decision; we can now move the planning process forward. This is good news for Rugeley town and its residents, as it will offer more choice to shoppers. Hopefully it will bring more people into the town and increase business for all town centre retailers."
Rugeley traders seem split over the development as many see Tesco removing the need to visit the town centre where prices will typically be higher and parking chargeable.
Ultimately only time will tell the effects of Tesco on Rugeley, personally I think the already run down town centre will be severly affected.
The development will include a superstore, petrol station and additional units for restaurant and leisure uses.
