You’d have to have been living under a rock to not know that 2012 means that the Olympics are coming to London, and the nation will have its chance to enjoy the Olympic spirit as the torch relay winds its way around the nation.

And the route that the symbolic flame will take through Rugby on the 45th leg of its journey on Monday July 2nd has now been published – with residents urged to decorate the route when the flame comes to town.

Rugby has a crucial part in the history of the games - Rugby School and Dr Arnold, its headmaster at the time, inspired the father of the modern Olympics - Pierre de Coubertin.

So the torch journey through our town has an extra special significance as it begins at 8.20am at Cemex  before journeying along Lawford Road, Corporation Street, North Street, Church Street, Whithall Road, Hillmorton Road and Horton Crescent before pausing at The Close at Rugby School.

It will then pay a visit to the Webb Ellis Statue, along Dunchurch Road and to Harris School.

From there, it will be driven to the village of Dunchurch and paraded through the village before leaving the borough just before 10.00am.

“We hope everyone will come out and line the streets,” said Councillor Heather Timms “This is Rugby’s opportunity to shine. As an opening to this year’s Rugby Festival of Culture, it really couldn’t be better.”
