Queen's Diamond Jubilee

Bank Holiday Weekend Celebrations

Saturday 2nd June 2012 until Tuesday 5th June 2012

Rugby Town Centre and Caldecott Park

Rugby is to play host to the biggest Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in all of Coventry and Warwickshire, organisers believe, and preparations are well underway.

The main events in Rugby town will take place on Saturday 2nd June, but activities will continue across the extended Bank Holiday weekend, with events planned for each day in Caldecott Park.

Rugby Borough Council, in association with Rugby First and principal sponsors, CEMEX, has announced that the centrepiece of the celebrations is to be a memorable unveiling ceremony at the Clock Tower that will draw comparisons with town celebrations of yesteryear.

The ceremony will be part of a parade featuring the Warwickshire Band, the Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers, and sailors from HMS Tireless, along with many local groups and organisations.

Special guests include the Queen's representative, the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, the Bishop of Coventry and the Mayor of Rugby.

Also planned for the Saturday 2nd June are:

  • Street entertainers
  • A Magnificent Monarch Montage - help the team at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum to create a massive union jack on a huge canvas, using drawings of the queen and stamps. Create red, white and blue collages of our queen in this fun Jubilee activity from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm
  • Funfair - all day in Caldecott Park
  • Delicious food - from Vermillion, Rugby College and The West Indian Club served in Caldecott Park
  • Rugby FM - live broadcast from 9:00 am to noon, plus live bands from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm, all in Caldecott Park
  • Stalls and activities from community groups and organisations
  • The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Parade is scheduled to leave at 2:00 pm from Gas Street, before heading through the independent quarter en route to the Clock Tower.

The town is starting to show signs of the preparations underway, with bunting now up in Market Square, Regent Street, Albert Street, Henry Street, Bank Street and Caldecott Park.

Cllr Heather Timms, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for Culture, said:

"Looking back at photos of of jubilee events in previous years, it is clear that Rugbaeans have a proud tradition of supporting national occasions. I hope that everyone will want to come into the town and enjoy the events that we have planned. It would be great if everyone could bring a Union Flag, or buy one on the day, and cheer the parade as it passes through the town and assembles at the Clock Tower for the ceremony."
