Releasing the Fear of Failure

"Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood."
Marie Curie

Does fear stop you from trying something new? Do you stop yourself from attending training; changing a job that bores you; starting a business that you are passionate about or meeting someone new - because you lack confidence?

Fear of failure, rejection or the unknown are debilitating reactions. Fear keeps us locked into negative thinking and prevents us from even attempting to take that first step. Even if it is for our own happiness, all we can think about is failure. Often we are limited by some of our previously unhelpful and outdated experiences.

When fear steps in the way, our growth and empowerment is halted. We begin to get set in our ways, less open to new ideas or concepts outside of what is safe and familiar to us.

Julian Sleigh in his book ‘Crisis Points: Working Through Personal Problems’ says we have three choices:

1.    Ignore it and hope it will go away. It won’t
2.    Try and live with it. Not forever
3.    Look at the gift within our fear and benefit from it. When we do, we emerge on the other side of life, surprised by joy

Each of us can be terrified of failing but whether we ignore it, live with it, look for the gift within it, risk it all or play safe, we cannot really avoid failure our entire lives. That’s virtually impossible. Failure actually stretches us beyond our normal limitations so that we can grow to be our real selves, who we truly are.

As Sarah Ban Breathnach says in her book ‘Something More’ ...
“This is failure’s generous gift. In life the worst thing that can happen isn’t failing. It’s never having tried. Seen in that light, smart people can never fail.”

EFT, (Emotional Freedom Techniques) NLP (Neuro-Liguistic Programming) and Hypnotherapy can really help you overcome these limitations and increase your confidence so that you can go on to happiness and success in your life, relationships and/or career.

All of us have tried new things...remember learning to ride a bike, baking a cake, learning to drive, even walking or toilet training? These were new to us all at some stage! Most of us have succeeded at one of these things. At least I hope so! We forget our successes, which at the time were huge milestones, and continue to focus on our failures.

“Real strength comes from knowing we can survive”

And many of us have survived intense situations and become stronger or wiser as a result. If there are things you would like to do, but you cannot seem to make that leap just yet, here are a few suggestions:

  • Ask a friend or parent to go with you
  • Contact your local council or business advisory service and see if there are any free courses available to help you set up your business
  • Look to someone within your organisation/field to mentor you
  • Work with a practitioner qualified in EFT, NLP and/or Hypnosis to release your fears

I offer consultations as well as a variety of generic and/or tailor-made CDs.  Currently I have a 2-for-1 special that runs until the end of January 2010. Pay for an hour and get 2! Give yourself the gift of freedom this January.

A 30 minute relaxation CD (available on my website) includes suggestions to boost your confidence; or help you set goals; or release limitations and/or negativity. Alternatively choose a tailor-made CD. Tell me what you desire and require and this can be integrated into your own special mp3 recording.
