This is my favourite recipe at this time of year, easy to make, tasty, and great with mash and gravy!

And don't forget to get all the ingredients from the high street, your local butcher can help you pick the best sausages for this dish!

You will need:

12 meaty sausages

125 g plain flour

4 eggs

240 ml milk

240 ml water

4 tbsp dripping or lard

2 large onions, sliced

1 tbsp mixed herbs (dried is fine)

A pinch of salt

Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4.

Sieve the flour into a large bowl, then add the eggs, milk and water one item at a time, and mix well to form a batter. Stir in the salt and leave the mixture to stand for half an hour.

In a preheated, deep ovenproof baking tin on top of the stove, add 2 tablespoons of the dripping or lard, and fry the sausages until browned, then place in the oven to cook for another 10 minutes.

Heat the rest of the dripping or lard and fry the onions in a pan until browned. Add the herbs and season with salt and pepper.

Turn the oven up to 220C/gas 7.

Remove the sausages from the oven and add the onions. Pour the batter, over the sausages and onion, and place the tin back into the oven.

Bake for 25 minutes.

Turn the oven down to 180C/gas 4 and cook for a final 10 minutes, until the top is golden and crispy

Remove from the oven and serve with gravy. and mashed spuds.

Send us your recipes, and tell us where you buy your sausages from too.
