PIRATES new boy Darcy Ward pulled off a major shock when he beat Chris Holder to lift the New South Wales state title at Tamworth.
The teenage sensation, who has just joined Poole Castle Cover from King’s Lynn for a club record fee of more than £28,000, bagged first place ahead of runner-up Sam Masters.
Holder, the hot favourite to lift the crown for a fourth successive year, had to be content with third place in the final yesterday.
Jason Doyle reached the B final on his comeback to action following a nine-month lay-off because of a shoulder injury.
Doyle, who has been told there is a Poole team place waiting for him if he can prove his fitness, is expected to be back in action when he lines up in the Victoria Championship at Broadford on Saturday.
Ward is also scheduled to take part in that meeting.
