Poole Pirates have brought Davey Watt back to the club for 2010 and named him as captain.

Watt spent last season on loan at Eastbourne Eagles, but he has now returned to Wimborne Road - where he has previously achieved great success.

Indeed Watt has won the title every year he has ridden for The Pirates in 2003, 04 and 08 and they will be looking for him to continue their great run in 2010.

"Davey, when he's ridden for Poole, has always added something to us in the pits," said Poole boss Matt Ford.

"He's always been popular with the fans, team-mates and promotion. He's always very easy to deal with, yet very professional.

"I know towards the end of last season his average dropped when he unfortunately didn't have a mechanic for the final two months.

"Davey, by his own admission, knew he'd taken too much on by doing that, but I'm confident he'll put that down as a small mistake and lead the team from the front.

"He's an obvious choice to take over the captaincy from Bjarne [Pedersen]. In fact, I didn't even consider giving it to anyone else.

"I look forward to watching him back in action and I'm sure the Pirates fans do also, and I hope he can lead us in his first year as skipper to the domestic league title.

"Davey was very unfortunate to lose his Poole place at the end of 2008 when he finished on 8.51, but the rules dictated we had to shed some riders after becoming champions.

"I don't want to set him any specific targets in relation to his average this time.

"I'm just looking for him to captain the team to a league-winning campaign.

"I'm very confident with the side we're trying to put together, and Davey is a vital cog in that team.

"Davey's one of seven riders we're trying to put together who can all up their averages, and I'm considering pairing him up with Darcy to give us a very potent partnership."

Watt is now the fourth rider signed up for Poole in 2010, and he is the third Australian joining Darcy Ward and Chris Holder - who have already agreed terms along with Dane Leon Madsen.

Ford also confirmed that another Aussie - Jason Doyle, who missed the entire 2009 season through injury, has been offered a place.

"I will keep a place open for Jason Doyle as long as he can prove his fitness," he added.

Havelock

Ford also revealed a shock in that former World champion Gary Havelock - a Poole asset - has re-signed for the club as number eight, in preference to his Redcar Bears team-mate Ben Wilson.

"There'll be some people wondering why we didn't go for Ben Wilson at number eight, especially because we've already given assurances to Jason Doyle he'll ride in our team as long as he's fit," said Ford.

"I wanted someone that, when the chips are down and we need to pull something out of the bag, he will.

"With Gary Havelock, I know I've got that - having worked with him already for four years.

"I just know I feel secure with my number eight, that he'll be able to help the club out in its hour of need.

"I do want to keep the opportunity to work with Ben again.

"If Ben is looking for a full-time Elite berth in 2011, I'd like it to be at Poole because he's a very good rider who'll improve.

"It's a horses-for-courses year and Gary fits the bill."

Ford has also confirmed that Joe Screen is unlikely to be in his plans for 2010.
