Tips for choosing a builder in Pontypridd and Rhondda Cynon Taff.

We all know how hard it can be to find a reliable and trustworthy tradesman. With word of mouth and recommendation becoming less and less coupled with increased migration and movement of communities the challenge is even more paramount.

However, the Trading Standards team in Pontypridd and Rhondda have come up with an aid, 'Building Trade Charter', for local people and busineses that are looking for trustworthy tradesman in Pontypridd and Rhondda.

The Building Trade Charter suggests the following tips for identyfying a tradesman:

  1. Check - Does the builder belong to a trade association? If they belong to the building trade charter they would have been vetted and a clear complaints procedure implemented.
  2. Insurance - Does the builder have an indate insurance certificate? This will cover repairs to damage, if anything goes wrong to your property.
  3. Recommendations - Check customer testimonials and referals out. Ask if you can see any previous local work that has been carried out.
  4. Compare Estimates - do you need planning permission? Get 3 quotes and ask if VAT is included. Make sure that the price is clear. Be aware that there is a difference between an estimate and a quotation. Aim to get a written quotation.
  5. Never pay for work in advance - Agree on a written payment schedule. NEVER pay cash and be aware of 'VAT FREE' deals!
  6. Agree the work - What do you want done? Be clear, ask for a written outline of works, security and training, waste disposal, hours worked and a completion date. Make sure any changes that may occur are confirmed in writing.

Remember a good builder won't mind you asking about any of the above, and will be happy to follow the above guidlines.
