Interview with Cranberry Moss, Oswestry Camping and Caravanning SIte

Hi Gail, and welcome to thebestof interview.  Now a lot of people in and around Oswestry may not know that one of the UK's best kept Caravan & Camping Site is just on the outskirts of town, so be interesting to get the inside track:

1.  How long have you been running Cranberry Moss Camping & Caravan Site?

We opened the site at Cranberry Moss on 1st August 2007, so we’re now in our 6th year here in sunny Shropshire.  We have lots of local tradesmen to thank in the seven month development it took to become 5 star campsite.  The build took place during a heatwave in May followed by the worst rain in years in the June!  The determination of everyone ensured we made our opening date and since that time we not had a night without someone camping here even on the coldest, frostiest nights of the winter.

That’s hardly surprising really given the tremendous amount of local attractions, festivals and places to visit.  We know our retired visitors love the fact they can hop on a bus right outside the gate and explore the countryside, towns & villages.

2. Because it's a Camping & Caravan Site does that mean only members can stay over?

We’re happy to welcome non-members but they will pay a little more than a member to stay.  Of course campers can join the club here on site to take advantage of member prices which for those over the age of 55 mean a 30% discount in low and mid season.

3. So if someone had relatives or friends with a touring caravan that wanted to stay, they could just call up and book a place?

In short – yes.  If we’re not in the office the answerphone is always switched on and we’ll return your call – just leave us your name and number.  We can take caravans, motorhomes, tents and trailer tents.  To make a booking we’ll need to know the name, address & postcode of the camper together with the length & width of their unit and whether they would like a pitch with electricity along with the dates they wish to stay.  A deposit of £25  or 25% of total cost, whichever is the greater, will need to be paid.

4. Is this the first caravan site you've run?

Prior to opening our site here at Cranberry Moss both Alan & I worked for the Camping & Caravanning Club for about 8 years at a number of their sites mainly in the Lake District and Scotland so we have a wealth of knowledge and, of course, we are experienced campers ourselves.  Shropshire was a new destination for us and we have found such a friendly welcome from everyone.  We’re so happy to now call this home.

5. Now what's this about THE BARN?    What is it and what does it bring for visitors to Cranberry Moss?

Ah, The Barn – Our new social room.  Again supplied & built using local tradesmen, this will be used by anyone staying on the site as a place to be social!

Coffee mornings, Afternoon Teas, Bingo, Darts, Quiz nights  will be on the agenda and we’ll hold our Site Birthday Party and New Year’s Eve celebrations in there too.  We have lots of fun & old-fashioned family games – everyone, of all ages, look forward to Cranberry Moss Stakes (a table top horse racing game).  We intend to install a Pool Table next year and hope to encourage anyone who has any particular interests/hobbies to share this with others.
Outside The Barn we have a communal BBQ area so no-one will have any excuse for not trying Jamie Wards sausages & burgers which are available in our shop!
There any many specialist groups of campers looking for a site with a meeting room and The Barn will be ideal for them as well as groups of family & friends who camp together.
If any local crafts person would like to give a demonstration or exhibit their wares we’d be delighted to hear from them.

If you have friends or family wanting to stay comfortably at a great campsite, let them know about CRANBERRY MOSS.
