What to do over the bank holiday weekend!

There’s lots going on in Garway on Saturday with their Family Fun Day and Hill Run. And by family we mean the WHOLE family, including your dog! Bring him or her along for the dog show; they’ll love the day out and attention! Kids are able to join in the free circus skills workshop with Robbo the Clown and Jet Set Jackie, they’ll have great fun! And for aspiring stars, children can enter the singing and dancing contest to show off their talents, there’s even a strong man contest! As well as all this there will also be a bouncy castle, skittles, throw the welly, coconut shy, local ice cream, a barbecue and teas! You and your family can relax with the jazz band, have your faces painted and enjoy the wonderful views and plenty of free parking! The Fun Day is open from 1pm till 4pm on Saturday the 24th August. There’s also something for the sporty ones among us with the Garway Hill Run. Jack’s Dash fun run will be held on the Saturday as well in aid of the Country Air Ambulance. Come and join in with the 10.2 rugged kms over Garway Hill, with all of the £10 entry fee donated to charity! 1:30pm start from Garway Common!

Or how about something a little closer to home, Dingestow’s Church Fete is taking place using the Village Hall and the Village Green. There will be various stalls and entertainment, home-made refreshments and a Grand Prize Draw! Some for a great day out that you don’t have far to travel to, this is perfect! From 2pm-4pm on Saturday 24th August.

If you’ve already got plans on the Saturday but would still love a day at a village fete, don’t worry! The Narth is holding its annual fete on Bank Holiday Monday 26th August. The fun starts at noon by the village hall and there are various stalls including face painting, welly wanging and outdoor skittles. There is a licensed bar with a barbecue, along with cakes served with tea and coffee from the local WI. Bring the family and enjoy a great afternoon. You never know, you might get lucky in the raffle!

For those of you who wanted their bank holiday plans to include tidying and de-cluttering the house, there’s lots of car boot sales near you! There is one in Usk at the Cricket Club held every Sunday that is open from 8am till 12pm. Weather permitting, its £5 for cars and £7 for vans, refreshments are available, contact 01291 673754. Another Sunday car boot sale is held in Pen-y-Fal (NP7 8BU) from 10am till 2pm (11am for buyers). Cars are £5 and vans and trailers are £8, buyers 50p on exit. A little further afield is Ledbury Car Boot Sale, every Sunday from 1-4pm. Its Ledbury’s biggest car boot sale with space for hundreds of sellers! Cars are £5, vans are £8 and buyers are FREE! Contact 07711905510. But what if you aren’t free on the Sunday but still want to get rid of some unwanted items? You’ve not to worry, as the Summer Car Boot Sale is being held on Monday the 26th August from 9am till 12pm. Either on the field or Little Mill Village Hall car park (indoors if wet). With free entry and free parking! Sellers are £5 per pitch and home-made refreshments are available in the Buffet Room. Come along to one of these great car boot sales, even if you aren’t selling, come along and grab yourself a bargain!

Or how about something more relaxing, like a stroll through some beautiful gardens? Voted ‘Most original garden’ in Best of British Gardens Readers Digest 2012, Veddw House has been created through more than 20years of patient work and really is a “must see” garden. Open every Sunday from 2pm till 5pm, a lovely day out. There’s also a Watercolour Painting Exhibition being held on the Saturday 24th from 10:30am till 4:30pm at St Mary’s Church Hall in Caldicot. Funds raised will help put a new roof on the Church Hall. Admission is free and refreshments will be available. On display will be over 70 paintings depicting local scenes, rural Welsh landscapes, seascapes, flowers and more. So if you find yourself at a loose end this Saturday and don’t fancy doing anything big this could be perfect for you.

How about something to make you laugh, who doesn’t love that! The Rain or Shine Theatre Company are putting on a production of Shakespeare’s ‘The Comedy of Errors’ at 3pm – 6pm on Bank Holiday Monday. The production will be staged at Babington Meadow in Penallt. Tickets are available on-line from www.ticketweb.co.uk/ (booking fee applies) or ring 08444771000.

And here’s one for the thrill seekers! Grass Track Club is holding a Bank Holiday Dash, there will be solos, side cars plus motocross. Practice is at 2:30pm with the first race at 4pm. Due to the meeting being cancelled in August 2012, the club has discounted admission prices by 50%, so adults are £5, OAPs £10, Under 16s £2.50 and Under 5s are FREE! This event is perfect for anyone who loves motocross and bikes. The event is held at Stallhouse, Vowchurs, Herefordshire, HR2 0QD.

And finally the Castell Roc Festival, Sunday 25th August till Saturday 31st August, 9am till 5pm. One great festival, eight great events, one great location, Cheptow Castle!
