We are all probably by now familiar with the Fairtrade symbol and ethos and appreciate that it really does make a difference to the lives of workers across the world. Monmouth celebrates its status as a Fairtrade town with Fairtrade fortnight which is here for the next two weeks. If you haven’t given up chocolate for Lent, this is the perfect time to indulge yourself whilst doing a good turn.  There are over 3000 Fairtrade goods now available including cotton, wine, flowers, honey, coffee and tea so with Mother’s Day around the corner you can treat your Mum and help those less fortunate at the same time.

We have the chance in Monmouth of meeting Wales’s only registered Fairtrade producer, Martha Musonza Holman as part of the Monmouth Women’s Festival which they stress is as much for men as for women. Martha’s fascinating story will focus on the 15 Fairtrade co-operatives she has helped set up that are creating links between the people of Wales and Zimbabawe. Monmouth Priory, 7th March at 7pm, £10 including a glass of wine.

This year, Monmouth Women’s Festival, now in its 10th year has a real mix  from romance to wildlife, gender and leadership in the church, growing up with Mormons, living through kidnap, life for African mothers and Oxfam’s Vision for women. It will also mark the launch of Monmouth’s Green Book which highlights community projects and sustainable gardening methods and a whole range of talks, walks and gardens to visit in 2013.

If you are a woman in business or thinking of starting one then don’t miss Women in Business on the 9th March at the Shire Hall. Three leaders in their field, Linda Narbeth,  Marianne Pettifor and Rebecca Jones  will take you from how to transform an idea into reality, to branding and selling,  to juggling work, family and life. There will also be time to network and light refreshments will be provided. 9.30-1.30 £20.
