Computer problems?

Tim Snelson from the IT centre in Monmouth shares their most common computer queries .

Why has my computer frozen?

Loads of reasons, could be an internal fault or a software up date or a virus but before panicking the best thing to do is turn off and leave off for a couple of hours and then restart it. If the only way to switch it off is by using the plug at the wall then do so but don’t make a habit of it as it can lead to a corruption of your computer. If it is still not working after you have restarted then give them a call on 01600 772774 and they can try and help over the phone.

My computer isn’t working- help!

Often this is because the battery has run out (on a laptop)  or a cable has come loose (on a PC) With a PC the cables are all colour coded to the sockets. Check that all the cables are securely plugged in with the computer off and then turn back on. Check too that the wall socket hasn’t been turned off accidentally.  If it’s a lap top plug in the charger and leave until the battery is fully charged.  If it still doesn’t work best to give them a call.

Why has all my text disappeared?

This is often a problem with laptops. Very often a wrist or jumper is brushing the mouse pad and deleting your text. If you tend to always use your laptop in one place you could get an external mouse to use as you would with a PC and lock the internal mouse pad to prevent accidentally losing your data.

Do you wear a copper magnetic bracelet and use a laptop?

Be warned that the magnetic field in the bracelet will interfere with and eventually destroy the hard drive of a laptop. This doesn’t apply to a PC. We see this a lot and there is no way round it other than taking off the bracelet and not having it anyway near the laptop. Hard drive failure is expensive to sort out so if you need to always wear the bracelet a PC would be better than a laptop.

Why can’t I get the internet working on my phone?

Check that you have connected your phone to your wireless network. You will need to enter your wireless key which is found either on the back or underneath your router. Once you have done this you will be connected. Also it’s worth checking you aren’t in airplane mode which does not allow for internet connections.  Go to settings and scroll though to wireless and network setting and check airplane mode is off.
