Peter Ingram aka The Bird Man is a familiar sight around Monmouth with his owl perched on his shoulder. It is 2 years since this tiny owl baby was rescued. Ideally he should have gone back to the wild but as Peter says "he was so little when I got him that he seems to think I am Mum."

At this time of year many of us may be finding seemingly abandoned birds and young animals. City Wildlife, the charity that Peter works with rescuing and restoring birds and animals to health gives the following advice.

If you find a baby bird in your garden or in the wild it is unlikely it has been abandoned so do not pick it up as the mother is probably nearby. If you have a cat or a dog that likes to chase birds keep them inside. Most baby birds are at this time of year trying out flying and beginning their journey to independence but they still need to be fed by their parents.

If you find an injured animal ring City Wildlife, they operate a 24 hour number 07794 179 207. They advise not to approach the animal as it is probably frightened and might lash out.

City Wildlfie runs entriely on public donations . You can visit their website at www.citywildlifecare.org.uk to find out more information, to make a donation or to book a session for schools or local groups. These talks are free but donations are always welcome.
