After finding The Black Horse on line when looking for somewhere to eat in the Foxton Locks area that catered for Gluten Free diet where we were meeting up with family. I asked my sister to book it on Friday as I was busy. I then read the reviews on Saturday on here which were very mixed to say the least.
We turned up on Sunday as planned and were seated straight away in the conservatory which has lovely viewed to the west as it’s in a raised position. We ordered our meals and waited around 30 minutes which we thought was fine as it was busy. Six of us had roast dinners and my nephew the Burger and chips.
Well... we needed have worried about the 1 star reviews on here (most were from accounts with only 1 or 2 reviews anyway) so I’m always wary of these... The decor was lovely and never bothered me as it’s the food and drink that I come for.
The roast dinners were the best we had experienced in a long time. There was a great range of veg, mash and roasts, the biggest of yorkshires, tasty gravy and tastiest, succulent lamb and beef on the roast dinners. The burger was also excellent as was the chips.
So great was the roast that we had to share a pudding, sticky toffee that was delightful. So take the 1 star reviews with a pinch of salt and try the fare for yourself.
I would also add the young waitresses we’re both excellent and attentive. There is a 10% service charge which goes to the waiting staff so we didn’t object to paying this at all, plus tipped an extra fee pounds as the food was so good. It snowed while we’re in there which wasn’t an issue as the heating was on and it was lovely and warm.
The sun came out while we were waiting for our puddings to arrive so we saw a great variation of weather during our visit!!

How lucky are we to have this fantastic forward thinking local in the village?. The whole atmosphere is the pub had changed, well done you . It’s gone from a dingy basic pub, to a tasteful wine bar/ pub and upmarket eatery. Forget the negative reviews, try it and make your own decision. It’s fab.

We went for a birthday meal out. Very willing staff but had no knowledge of the various gins on offer in the bar which had been well publicised, no slimline tonic available! The food was disappointing for the price, rack of lamb in my view is not the same as lamb cutlets which have been individually cooked. Not happy with the almost compulsory service charge. The chips with the steak were the best bit.

We saw the signs promoting the revamped pub which we had visited some years before. The food was not up to the standard we were expecting. I had the steak and ale pie,the meat was ok but there was not enough gravey, if you want a good pie try Grants at Burrough on the Hill the chips were dry and floury not a patch on The Moorings Crick my wife had the goats cheese salad which had plenty of cheese. If you want a good quality meal locally go to The Bell at Gumley and the prices are better.

Sunday roast too expensive under new management. Really objected to cards on table advising of 10% service charge unless one raised matter at till. Before 10%, already slightly dearer than other good quality pubs in nearby villages. Bill (with 10%) 17.60 pounds each person for roast beef & machine-made coffee. Soda water 80 pence, whereas other pubs charge between zero - 50 pence. Atmosphere good, nice view, but ordinary decor. Not 'Ye olde oak beam' type. Quality of food & service very good, but similar (cheaper) quality to be found in other village pubs around Market Harborough. Regretfully will delete it from list of regular Sunday lunch watering holes.

Don’t normally write reviews. Went to this place for dinner last night & it was fabulous, fillet medallions were amazing & sticky toffee pud with caramelised banana was sublime. Will definitely be back.

We are staying in Foxton for a week and visited the pub today at lunchtime for a meal . The food was excellent , my husband's fish and chips with mushy peas was one of the best he said he had tasted and my chicken breast meal followed by baked cheesecake was very tasty. Food is freshly cooked hence a short wait and staff are very friendly. Would definitely recommend.

We came for a meal with friends last night and were very impressed with the food. The four of us had four different starters and mains and desserts, thus sampling 12 items from the menu. All dishes were absolutely fabulous. It should be noted I am VERY fussy with my food and expect quality dishes. The Black horse chefs certainly delivered.
The waitresses were absolutely delightful girls, very helpful, friendly and attentive. We sat in the conservatory area, which was warm and pleasant. The chairs were quite uncomfortable after a couple of hours but we are old gits with sore backs.
We thought the lighting was possibly the wrong way round, the bar was quite dim, and the conservatory was very bright. That's just our opinion though, and certainly wouldn't put us off.We look forward to coming back soon and trying more items off the menu.
Hubby said there was a great range of beer on tap which pleased him, and is usually the big decider as to whether we go back somewhere. We will see you very soon!

Lovely atmosphere. Good selection of meals for adults and kids. They do a fantastic roast. There is a large garden and a small play area for kids.

One of the nicest Sunday dinners I've had in a pub for a long while, with proper Yorkshire Puddings and well cooked moist meat.

The sweet was very nice as well.

Can't comment on the beer as I was driving, but fairly standard selection of ales from the look of the pumps.

Not the cheapest, but worth it.

Limited vegetarian choice but ok. Staff friendly. Ate whilst listening to rave music which was a first, a nice soft background music would be better. A bit of a wait. Nothing special but ok, I've been to worse places.

After a bad experience of Fish and Chips at another local pub yesterday. I opted for an alternative which was very tasty. Luckily my grandchildren had Fish and chips. Nice large portions meant they did not eat it all so I tried it - really excellent fish in a lovely batter and very tasty.
