Minister for Criminal Information Lord Taylor of Holbeach congratulated the winners at a reception in the House of Commons yesterday (18 June) for a variety of outstanding work.
Winners include:
OSCAR Neighbourhood Watch in Derby which was recognised for vastly improving the relationships between residents and the police.
KATE VAUGHAN NEWTON of Nottingham who was recognised in the 'Inspiring Youth' category for her work raising the profile of Neighbourhood Watch in the minds of young people.
Harborough District's 'Harborough Be Safe' team was selected as a runner up for the ‘Innovation Award’ for a team of volunteers who fit free enhanced security to property in the area, helping to reduce the number of distraction burglaries.
Gill Riley of Derbyshire was runner -up in the 'National Database' Award' for her time and effort in championing the Neighbourood Alert communication system throughout Derbyshire, and sharing her skills by training other volunteer administrators.
Innovation in crime prevention
Speaking at the event Lord Taylor said:
Recorded crime is down by more than 10 per cent under this government and I am sure the hard work of the dedicated people from the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network has played an important part in this.
All nominations are excellent examples of innovation in crime prevention. Most importantly, these awards recognise how communities can work together to make our streets safer.
Neighbourhood Watch in the UK covers 6 million households. There are around 170,000 neighbourhood watch groups ranging from the smallest schemes covering a dozen or so homes in a single street to county-wide associations with many thousands of members.
