We have lived in Lichfield for over 37 years. David is a civil engineer, nearing retirement, and Debbie has her own business in health and wellbeing. We have always had a very active lifestyle and enjoyed reasonably good health apart from the usual wear and tear on joints etc.
St Giles Hospice has always been a charity that we have supported but last year we lost several friends with cancer and I (Debbie) was looking for a significant challenge for my 60th birthday in 2013. Our local hospice is also celebrating a significant milestone this year – 30 years of caring for our local community – and to celebrate wanted 30 adventurers to go trekking in North Vietnam, raising at least £60,000 in the process.
David had already reached this milestone birthday and didn’t want to be left out. So we set ourselves a target of raising £10,000 over and above the cost of the trek.
We will be trekking for 6 to 8 hours for 6 days in the Hoa Binh province, located in the mountainous area south east of Hanoi, in hot and humid conditions. We have been given a training schedule to build up our fitness and ability to take part in the trek.
After signing up for the trek in May 2012 Debbie began to experience a lot of pain in her legs when standing still. This was eventually diagnosed as a trapped nerve and back surgery was required. I was told I would need 3 months to recover – what about the Trek I asked my surgeon?!! Well I was operated on in January and our trip to Vietnam is what has spurred on my recovery.
