Classical world’s best known guitar duo, Katona Twins, perform in Leeds

 

The critically acclaimed ‘classical world’s best known guitar duo’ (Daily Telegraph), Katona Twins, perform Spanish dance music at The Venue, Leeds College of Music on Tuesday 25 February as part of Leeds International Concert Season 2013/14.

 The Katona Twins will perform an exciting concert featuring Spanish dance music and music with a Spanish influence. The programme includes excerpts from Bizet’s very popular Carmen Suite (arr Katona), Boccherini’s lively Introduction and Fandango (arr Katona) and Albéniz’s beautiful Mallorca (arr Katona) and stunning Córdoba (arr Katona).

The programme also features Agustin Barrios Mangore’s elegant and haunting Vals No 3, Rodrigo’s Invocation et Danse and Agustin Castellon Campos’ flamenco inspired Aires del Puerto Real. The concert concludes with a performance of Peter Katona’s Meditation and Passacaglia and the popular Ritual Fire Dance from de Falla’s ballet El amor brujo which was used on the soundtrack to the 2008 film Edison & Leo.  

Katona Twins, Peter and Zoltán, have given recitals in the major concert venues throughout the world including Carnegie Hall, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow and the Philharmonie in Berlin. The duo has been invited on numerous occasions to record for the BBC and other international television and radio stations. The twins studied both individually and as a duo in Budapest, Frankfurt and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 2004, the duo was awarded the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni prize, the first guitarists in the trust’s history. In 2009, as the soloists of the Night of the Proms the duo performed live to half a million people in arenas across Europe.   

This concert is part of the Leeds International Chamber Season 2013/14, curated by Kathryn Stott, and focusing on Dance music, exploring a whirlwind of countries, styles and formations. A highlight of this series is former prize-winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition, Kathryn Stott, performing a solo recital featuring Rachmaninov’s Variations on a theme of Corelli (25 Mar).
