If you are in this boat, you may be finding that choosing a kitchen is proving to be more daunting than you thought, not least because of all the choice out there! If you’re after the perfect kitchen then here are some hints and tips to help you get it right.

In order to help narrow down what you want, look at the existing kitchen and decide on what it is that you like and dislike about it. Is there enough work surface and storage space? Are you happy with where the oven, sink and fridge are located? Make a list if what it is you want from your new kitchen as this will help you when it comes to looking at different ones.

If you’ve just brought a new home and aren’t happy with the current kitchen, don’t be too hasty to rip it out and install a new one, if that's possible. By living in the kitchen for a few months, you will get to know what it is that does and doesn’t work well. There would be nothing worse than getting a brand new kitchen and in 6 months, realising that it actually doesn’t flow the way you would now like and that you would do things differently if you could have a new kitchen again.

When thinking about your new kitchen and what you want from it, consider not only how much work space and storage you need but also where you will want them. If you’re currently layout is perfect then you may not want to change where everything is, but if there are things you aren’t happy with, this is the perfect opportunity to rectify them. Consider also how you use the space, whether there are kids to consider or if you like to host regular dinner parties, for example, as these may reflect how much space you need for certain features. Would a breakfast bar be useful, or space for a table, so people can be in the kitchen while you cook or would more space for storage be of greater value?

Choosing the fixtures and fittings can be a great thrill but it is also important to consider the style of the rest of your house before getting your completely perfect kitchen. You may have your heart set on an ultra-modern space but, if you’ve got a traditional house, would it end up standing out like a sore thumb?

Colours are also an important consideration as you want a space that you are comfortable with, which enhances the rest of your home but at the same time isn’t drab and boring. Adding a feature wall or investing in some feature tiling in the splash guard area around your hob can really add some pizazz to the space.
