I will always use Ashdown Hurrey. I was new to this whole self assessment tax return system. So Gemma Newstead explained it all extremely well and made it easy for me to understand! Gemma is always really quick and very professional when it comes to getting my tax return done and I would highly recommend her to anyone!
I had contacted Ashdown Hurrey to help me with the opening statement and cash flow projections for my application for a grant, to offset build costs for my holiday letting business. The grant was approved unanimously by the board members and my application was commended for thoroughness and the quality of the financial data submitted. The task was daunting for me as a layperson, and Martin Copland used my core data to create a sound rationale and key financial assumptions to complete the cash flow projections. He exceeded my expectations by helping me to complete other spreadsheets, which were not part of the remit, to give me the best chance to be victorious, not only for the application but also for the business. He was kind, patient and extremely supportive, and was available to answer my queries, even late at night. I felt during the process that he cared and I received excellent service despite the fact that my business is micro. Ashdown Hurrey has a team of highly skilled and trained professional accountants and support staff, who are humble and dedicated. Ashdown Hurrey is a first class company who give a very good service.
I have added my own review previously for Ashdown Hurrey but wanted to comment again following the completion of the first end of year accounts for thebestof Hastings. Steve Sampson explains matters clearly and concisely. I've been impressed with the quality of the service and advice received. Although I've known Steve for a while it's good to be on the receiving end of personal service, a trait that extends throughout the practice.

Ashdown Hurrey carried out an external audit for us , as required by the Charities Commission. They advised us on how to proceed, dealt with it very efficiently, and met Charity Commission deadlines. Steve, Daniel and the team are real experts in the field when it comes to charities - there's nothing they don't seem to know. While their role as independent examiners and auditors means that they are there to protect donors and assist with the Trustees' quest for good governance, they are only too keen to help staff and make the whole process as smooth as possible. They have often worked to tight deadlines for us in the past and have always been extremely competitively priced. We are delighted with the service that they provide us with and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
I have been running my specialised electronics business alongside another unconnected family business and following a discussion with Ashdown Hurrey, it was evident that it would be better if the electronics were separated out. I was a bit concerned that these things take time, but I was surprised how quickly the new separate company was put in place once I pressed the go button. Simon Lawrence and Mick Murduck have provided advice and support with my business activities generally and I am pleased to see this carrying on with the new business. Like a lot of small businesses, I have all the skills that my customers want, but do not have much spare time to ensure that the administrative burden is catered for, but I do recognise that I ignore these requirements at my peril. Having Simon and Mick there to guide me through it saves me a lot of time and I am also reassured that with their years of experience they can keep me on the straight and narrow.
We work in a very people orientated world with our staff, parents and most importantly the nursery children being the focus of our activities. We also work in a highly regulated and controlled environment so we are used to dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s to make sure everything is dealt with correctly. With this in mind, it was reassuring to have our accounts and taxation affairs dealt with by a company which shared those values, Simon Lawrence has been advising us for a number of years and we respond well to his professional approach. Whilst none of us are particularly keen to pay unnecessary tax, we recognise our obligations but appreciated Simon bringing to our attention some of the things that we could do to ensure that we got the best tax breaks through our investment in our business. Simon’s advice enabled us to not only make suitable pension provisions, but also to see the benefit of maximising tax reliefs. Ashdown Hurrey’s close association with Spectrum Financial Services gave us access to a similarly committed IFA in Graham Peters and he not only dealt with the pension arrangements but also helped secure the reliability of the nursery through Key Man Insurance. It is good to work with people who share our philosophy who enable us to build on the strength of our business.
We have worked with Ann Grant at Ashdown Hurrey since we first started the business in 1992 and Ann tells us that we were one of her very first clients, so we really do see her as being integral to the business. Over the years, we have been through VAT inspections, an Income Tax enquiry and a PAYE enquiry as well as all the usual business dramas and Ann has been the constant factor bringing a sense of calm to these potentially stressful situations. We have told Ann that she cannot think of retiring at any stage in the future, as we would have to as well, and we are not ready to do so!
I hadn't realised how stressful a tax enquiry could be until I was on the end of one myself. The accountant I was previously using unfortunately wasn't up to the task. It was a great relief to be recommended to Ann Grant of Ashdown Hurrey, who dealt with the questions asked by HMRC in a firm but professional manner. She was proactive, tenacious and knowledgeable on the detail regarding the tax laws surrounding my specific case. This secured me a positive outcome, and saved me a significant amount of tax. From my point of view, I want to work with an accountant who has the knowledge and experience to meet all my needs. Ann put me at ease through the process, and I am very happy with the results.
