A review of Edward Fox on Trollope in Barsetshire by Sue Riddiough

I was fortunate to see Edward Fox on Trollope in Barsetshire at the Riverside Studios recently. As a Trollope fan it was wonderful to hear favourite passages from the whole series from The Warden to The Last Chronicle of Barsetshire spoken aloud by such a wonderfully English actor. They were interspersed with anecdotes from Anthony Trollope’s autobiography which also gave interesting insights into the origin of some plot lines, the decision to kill of a well-loved character and other inspiration from his work and family. To carry an audience with such a monologue is a feat indeed and Edward Fox, who must surely be one of our thespian treasures, was more than fit for the task. The amount memorised was an absolute tour de force and delivered with such superb timing and finesse.

My friend had never read any novels by Trollope but also managed to enjoy the evening – and was so inspired that she has since taken up a copy of The Warden.

The Riverside Studios were a great venue and well worth a visit for the dining and bar area as well as the broad selection of cultural diversions offered – theatre, cinema, art exhibitions and a great restaurant as well!

Best Regards
