Whether or not you’re familiar with the name Leonard Bernstein, musical fans will most likely know his timeless tunes such as “I Feel Pretty”, “Somewhere” and “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story; “One Hundred Easy Ways” from Wonderful Town; and jazz standard “Some Other Time” from On the Town.
In a great coup for Guernsey’s cultural calendar and fresh from the Barbican’s Bernstein Centenary Festival in honour of what would have been his 100th birthday on August 25th, this unique evening brings us three world-class performers celebrating the musical superman who bestrode the Broadway stage as whole-heartedly and adeptly as he did the world’s great concert halls as a conductor.
Renowned arts broadcaster Edward Seckerson returns to St James as host following last year’s evening with Dame Patricia Routledge, along with double Olivier Award nominated actress and singer Sophie-Louise Dann and double Tony Award nominated arranger, composer and musical director Jason Carr on the piano.
Edward conducted one of the last major interviews with Bernstein before his death in 1990 and it is that memorable encounter that is at the heart of this intimate show. Through a heady cocktail of stories and songs, the trio draw upon their vast knowledge of the scores and the stories behind them to create a unique evening that explores the life and music of this extraordinary man.
Performed live on stage are songs from some of the most popular musicals of all time, including West Side Story, Candide, On the Town and Wonderful Town; as well as gorgeous rarities from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Peter Pan, Mass and Trouble in Tahiti.
Offstage, we’re thrilled to give audiences the opportunity to make a night of it at St James with food and drink inspired by the settings of Bernstein’s classic shows. Upstairs in Café St James, with its glorious views across the islands, Tanguy’s will be serving a pre-show dinner, and we’ll have Aperitif selling their fabulous cocktails throughout the evening.
