The Ionian Singers, under their conductor Timothy Salter, with Harp Duo Mariposas, will give a concert in All Saints’ Church, Weston Green, Esher on Saturday 23rd June 2012 at 7.30pm.

To celebrate the accession in 1952 of HM Queen Elizabeth II several composers were commissioned by the Arts Council to write a piece for  unaccompanied voices; two of them, Gerald Finzi’s White flowering days and Herbert Howells’ Inheritance are included in this programme. Timothy Salter has been commissioned to compose a piece to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, to be given its first performance in this concert. The words he has chosen for The Quality of Mercy are taken from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. They speak of the superiority of  the quality of mercy over the temporal power wielded by kings.

The time-honoured partnership between harp and voice is given an intriguing new twist in this concert. Harp Duo Mariposas (the young Italian harpists Cristina Di Bernardo and Silvia Vicario) will perform music for two harps, and join The Ionian Singers in music from Brahms to the present day.

All Saints Church, Chestnut Avenue, Esher, Surrey, KT10 8JL
