Team Epsom & Ewell have won the coveted overall Borough Trophy for the second time at the annual P&G Surrey Youth Games held on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.

The team of 225 young people from across the Borough aged between seven and 15 years did the Borough proud and came away with an incredible collection of medals, securing first position for Team Epsom & Ewell:

Team Epsom & Ewell also scored the maximum bonus points for entering the highest number of teams this year, 35 teams in all 17 sports - basketball, badminton, boccia, boxing, girl's cricket, girl's football, hockey, judo, lacrosse, netball, netball high 5, girl's rugby, swimming, squash, table tennis, touchtennis and tennis.

Councillor Jan Mason, Chairman of the Council's Leisure Committee said: “I find young people in Epsom & Ewell to be incredibly enthusiastic and active members of our community and this weekend they have done us proud!

“What a fantastic result!

“I am a passionate believer in the power that sport has to bring people together, build skills and strength of character and, of course, stay fit and healthy. By providing our young people with the opportunity to engage in a wide range of sports at an early age, I hope that their interest in staying fit will last well into adulthood.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Coaches who have given up their time to train and motivate the young people in Team Epsom & Ewell and to the parents and families who supported the team to victory!”

The Council's Leisure team had a superb response this year with a record 494 people who registered to take part in the free trials and coaching sessions organised by the Council in April, May and June.

The free training sessions for all sports were run by qualified coaches and the majority have direct links with local clubs' junior sections, offering youngsters who took part, a chance to get involved with a club on a more long-term basis.
