Pupils get physical and support hospice care

Pupils at a Surbiton preparatory school have put their physical prowess to good use with their annual sponsored run raising £5,000 for Princess Alice Hospice.

Tim Green, Community Fundraiser visited Shrewsbury House School on 26 June 2013, to accept the cheque from the Headmaster, Mr Kevin Doble and to meet and thanks some of the pupils who took part in the fundraising. Tim also took the opportunity to tell the pupils about the difference their efforts would make to patient care and support.

Tim Green said: “The pupils at Shrewsbury House School have been amazing; the £5,000 they have raised could fund 25 attendances at the Day Hospice - where patients receive comprehensive medical and therapeutic care free of charge. Alternatively the money could fund 51 visits to a patient’s home by a community Princess Alice nurse. Our nurses provide specialist care management, symptom control, practical advice and emotional support, seven days a week.”

The event is hugely popular at the school with all boys aged 8 to 13 taking part and staff, family and friends adding their support. The school raised £15,000 in total and chose to support two national charities as well as the Hospice.

Kevin Doble, Headmaster, said: “The governors, staff and pupils of Shrewsbury House School were delighted to select Princess Alice Hospice as one of the major benefitting charities from the school’s annual sponsored run.  The Hospice is such a worthy cause and provides immeasurable support to its patients and the community as a whole.”

Tim Green added: “It is vital that Princess Alice Hospice has the support of the community it serves. Our services cost more than £8m, and with a modest NHS contribution, over 77% of our income must be generated through fundraising and voluntary donations from the community. It is great that the pupils chose to support their local hospice and we hope that they will be our fundraisers of the future and continue their fundraising throughout their time at school and beyond.”
