In support of Ukrainian Independence Day which falls on 24 August each year as with last year a gathering in the form of a picnic was arranged by the local Rotary Clubs and Epsom Rotary Club, together with Rotary Clubs Ewell, Ashtead and Leatherhead alongside with Jo Sherring from the Epsom & Ewell Refugee Network on Sunday 20 August 2023 through much of the day.

Those assisting arrived in good time to set up the gazebos etc and one picture shows a selection of those involved posing before the arrival of the guests.

It was a great occasion with entertainers, and even kite flying at 300 feet. The picnic was held at Ashtead Football club and many thanks to them. The Rotary stands also provided games and crafts for the children A Rotarian on his bike was also available to assist those arriving from the Station to the venue.  We were lucky the weather remained pleasant throughout the event.

Epsom & Ewell Refugee Network following the event thanked the Rotary clubs of Epsom, Ewell, Ashtead and Leatherhead for arranging the picnic at Ashtead Football club. Jo continued by saying that it was so lovely to see families come together for a relaxing day with lots of fun for the children.  The Punch and Judy show was a highlight and the children loved taking part in some of the other activities such as rock decorating, card making and getting glitter tattoos. There were also face painting, football etc. Jo added that it made all families feel like they were welcome in our community and was so good to see everyone forget their worries and just enjoy themselves for a few hours in the sun.

Attached are a few photos provided by Jo Sherring and some shared quotes from some of the guests:

“The picnic was such fun.  There were so many fun things to do and we loved the entertainment and ice creams” said a 21 year old picnic goer and a Ukrainian guest added

“Being able to come together with a group of other Ukrainians to enjoy food and drinks whilst the children were being entertained made for such a special day.  It reminded me of being at home and the type of gatherings we would have there.  Thank you for such a lovely day”.

We are also planning for a party for the Ukrainian Christmas which falls in January.
