Local people in New Year Honours List

A deputy mayor, KPMG director and a specialist in cancer genetics are among the people from Epsom to make the New Year’s Honours list.

Over in Banstead honours went to a groundsman, volunteer for a centre for disabled riders and a local history researcher.

Deputy Mayor of Epsom and Ewell Councillor Michael Arthur was made an MBE for his services to the community in the borough.

Coun Arthur said: “I am very pleased indeed. It came as a great surprise. “I have been a member of the council for 46 years now.”

Coun Arthur, who has lived in Ewell all his life, is a member of Ewell Village Residents Association and has helped local charities.

Teresa Sienkiewicz, a director at accountancy and finance firm KPMG, was made an OBE for services to the accountancy and pensions professions.

Mrs Sienkiewicz, who is virtually totally deaf and uses a powerful hearing aid, also has a number of charitable commitments.

She is on the audit committee of a charity which provides education for disadvantaged women and a council member of a charity which undertakes research on pensions.

Audrey Therese Ardern-Jones, an associate lecturer at the Royal Marsden, was made an OBE for services to cancer genetics nursing care.

Eunice Smith, from Epsom, who used to be the head of constituency finance at the Conservative Central Headquarters, was awarded a British Empire medal (BEM) for political service.

Mrs Smith said: “I’m very pleased. I left two years ago after being there for 25 years.”

Banstead resident David Brazier, chairman of the ground committee for Woodmansterne Sports Club, was awarded the BEM for services to sport.

Also Colin Sutherland, a school chair governors and researcher into local history, was made an MBE for services to the community in Banstead.

Miss Hilda Muriel Holyman, known as Muriel, was awarded the BEM for services to the Diamond Riding Centre in Carshalton and to the community in Banstead.
