Great news – your bins just got better!

In changes made from 31 March 2026 you can now put more into your mixed recycling bin. In Surrey, aerosol cans, cartons, foil, non-black plastic plant pots and squeezy metal and plastic tubes will be able to go in your mixed recycling bin wherever you live in Surrey.

Just follow these simple steps and then add to your bin:

  • empty aerosol cans
  • scrunch clean foil into a ball no smaller than a tennis ball
  • clean foil trays
  • empty, rinse and, if possible, remove lids of cartons such as juice and soup cartons
  • clean non-black plastic plant pots
  • empty squeezy metal and plastic tubes, such as tomato puree and toothpaste tubes

By recycling, you’re helping to reduce waste, increase recycling rates and protect our environment. And don’t forget, Surrey’s recycling rate is the joint second highest of comparable areas in England!

The new items are being added as part of the national Simpler Recycling changes, which aim to make recycling more consistent across the country. For more information, visit the Surrey Environment Partnership’s webpage on Simpler Recycling.

If you want to know which bin to put virtually any item you can think of in, use the Surrey Recycles search tool. Just enter your postcode then an item and the tool tells you what to do with it.

If you live in Epsom or Ewell, it’s worth staying up to date with recent recycling and collection changes to make sure you’re making the most of local services.

Under Epsom & Ewell Borough Council’s Simply Weekly Recycling system, residents continue to benefit from:

  • Weekly mixed recycling collections
  • Weekly food waste collections
  • Weekly glass recycling
  • Weekly textile recycling
  • Weekly refuse collections
  • Fortnightly garden waste collections

These changes are designed to make recycling simpler and improve environmental outcomes across Surrey.

With rising awareness around sustainability, making sure the right items go in the right bins is more important than ever.
