Keep Britain Tidy has announced a record-breaking number of award-winning parks and green spaces for 2014.
Epsom Common, Ewell Court Park, Alexandra Recreation Ground, Rosebery Park and Nonsuch Park are among a record-breaking 1,476 parks and green spaces that today received prestigious Green Flag Awards.
The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.
Jan Mason, Chairman of the Leisure Committee at Epsom & Ewell Borough Council said “We're very proud of all of our parks and green spaces and particularly of the award winners. The Borough has fantastic parks and green spaces and these awards are a great endorsement of the work of council staff and the army of local volunteers, who work all year round, rain and shine, to make these green spaces attractive and accessible to both the local residents and wildlife”.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces.
“A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy. Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”
The five green spaces that were put forward for judging for the award were selected as representative of the different green spaces in Epsom & Ewell:
• Epsom Common: a local nature reserve
• Ewell Court Park: a small green space with some historic features
• Alexandra Recreation Ground: a sports ground
• Rosebery Park: a formal town centre park
• Nonsuch Park: a green space run in partnership with the London Borough of Sutton
