Epsom Common Celebrates Another Green Flag Award – One of Surrey's Natural Treasures

There's another reason to be proud of our local area! Epsom Common has once again been recognised with a prestigious Green Flag Award, celebrating it as one of the UK's best-managed green spaces.

The internationally recognised Green Flag Award is the benchmark for parks and open spaces, recognising places that are welcoming, well maintained, safe and managed with nature in mind.

Councillor Liz Frost, Chair of the Environment Committee, stated:

"We are incredibly proud that Epsom Common Local Nature Reserve has received a Green Flag Award for the 20th consecutive year. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our Countryside team, volunteers and partners, who work tirelessly to protect and enhance this special place for wildlife and visitors alike.

"Receiving this award in the Green Flag Award scheme's 30th anniversary year makes this milestone even more special. It highlights two decades of excellence in managing one of the borough's most important natural spaces and creating habitats that enable biodiversity to flourish.

"As a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Epsom Common plays a vital role in supporting rare species and habitats. We remain committed to protecting and nurturing this unique environment for future generations to enjoy.

"A huge thank you to our Countryside team, volunteers and partners, including the Epsom Common Association, the Lower Mole Partnership and Natural England — it is your continued support that helps make achievements like this possible."

Anyone who has spent time walking around Epsom Common will understand why it continues to receive this honour. Covering around 435 acres, it's one of the largest local nature reserves in Surrey and offers an incredible variety of landscapes, from ancient woodland and peaceful ponds to open grassland and wetlands.

Whether you're enjoying an early morning dog walk, taking the children on a bug hunt, spotting birds around the ponds or simply escaping the hustle and bustle for an hour, Epsom Common is a wonderful reminder of how fortunate we are to have such beautiful countryside on our doorstep.

The Common is home to an impressive range of wildlife throughout the year, making every visit a little different. Summer brings colourful wildflowers and butterflies, while autumn transforms the woodland into a spectacular display of gold and amber.

Many residents don't realise that guided walks and seasonal events are also organised throughout the year, helping people discover more about the area's fascinating wildlife and history.
