A 17-stong team of doctors, nurses, patients and supporters from Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is taking part in the Kingston-upon-Thames Dragon Boat Challenge on July 15 in aid of the South West Thames Kidney Fund.

A team of doctors, nurses, patients and supporters from a local NHS trust is set to paddle down the River Thames to raise money for kidney disease research.

And the group has launched an appeal for the public to help ensure that it is plain sailing.

The 17-strong renal team from Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is taking part in the Kingston-upon-Thames Dragon Boat Challenge on July 15.

The group – dubbed the "Sweaty Kidney Scientists" – is taking on the challenge in aid of the South West Thames Kidney Fund.

Each member needs to raise £250 to take part in the event and the team is hoping to break its fundraising target of £5,000.

Dr Mark Dockrell is a senior scientist and director at the South West Thames Institute for Renal Research within the trust.

“The lives of many people are seriously affected by kidney disease,” he said.

“By supporting the Dragon Boat Challenge you will help to fund vital research into this extremely debilitating, and sometimes fatal, illness.”
