Epsom and Ewell Borough Council is encouraging residents to take part in England's Great Litter Count.

The count is organised by Keep Britain Tidy, who identifies the companies whose products have littered the most.

For the first time, the charity is asking for volunteers to come up with the most comprehensive information ever.

Willing volunteers are encouraged to count the amount of litter that they see on the boroughs streets and then fill in a simple online form.

Keep Britain Tidy will then tabulate the results and reveal which brands contribute the most litter.

This allows the charity to put more pressure on the worst companies to reduce waste left by their customers.

Councillor Jean Smith, Chairman of the Environment Committee said: "Epsom & Ewell residents are rightly proud of this Borough and they want it to look its best".

"Litter is a scourge of the modern age and, as an area that hosts thousands of visitors every year as people come to see the races, visit our historical sites and enjoy the open spaces, we have a special interest in keeping the our Borough tidy".

"Council staff do a great job and now members of the public have their own part to play. I hope this Great Litter Count will result in the worst offending companies taking steps to reduce wasteful packaging or, in the case of enterprises like takeaways, providing litter patrols".
