GIRL Guides in Banstead are one step closer to replacing their 40-year-old hut - which has "seen better days" - following a generous donation from a supermarket.
The Banstead Guide Association received £1,000 from the Asda store in Burgh Heath, which has helped to close the gap on the fundraising target for their new headquarters.
Patsy Wooldridge, district commissioner of Banstead Girl Guides, said: "The Guide hut provides a fantastic resource to the community, but after four decades it’s safe to say it has seen better days. We’ve been campaigning to build new premises to encourage further use by everyone in the community.
"We are looking for any help and sponsorship to achieve our target and hope past parents of girls, or even former girls who have grown up and whose daughters are now enjoying the benefits of Girlguiding, will support us and allow Girl Guides in Banstead to continue for another 100 years and beyond.”
The money raised by the Asda store was part of the Community Life scheme launched this year to help local charities and groups.
Caroline Hayton, Community Life champion at Asda in Burgh Heath, said: "We want to help support projects, charities and organisations that make a difference to the area and improve life for the residents in it.
“The Banstead District Girl Guides are in desperate need of a new building which will hopefully be used by all the community when it opens.
"It would be a terrible shame for the Guides to not reach their target so we want everyone to dig deep and help support such a worthy campaign.”
