Herstmonceux Castle is an amazing artifact from the Plantagenet period of English history. For a castle that has been witness to various fortunes over its lifetime it's remarkable the exterior is as untouched by time as it is. The gardens and surrounding land could benefit from some love and attention to return it to its former glory, the castle itself is a awe-inspiring experience. Knowing the interior has been gutted and more recently renovated since it's original construction in 1441, it's not especially disappointing visitors can't explore inside the walls. However, as a monument to a England's ancient history being able to walk through the grounds and around the castle are well worth the visit.

Building impressive and a shame it's in a poor state. Hence reason for it being closed.
Gardens are very pleasant but lacking slightly in tlc. The lake near the folly is very peaceful and lillies pretty. The folly needs extensive work and is also closed.

Very friendly and relaxed. My 94 year old friend really enjoyed a few hours out of her home in the sun. She tucked in to a bacon sandwich with tomato ketchup with relish too. I enjoyed the same with an ice cream after. Nice not to eat healthy food for once! I went off with our dog into the garden grounds where she was on a lead. Bring poo bags as I didn’t and then had to go back to the car and go back to find the doggy do before anyone else stood in it!

Had a private tour of the Castle,Melinda, the guide was so knowledgeable, on point, sense of humour, inclusivity.
It became my favourite place to go and to my shame I lived in Eastbourne 11 years and visit so many things in UK but not on my door step.
Amazing, as it 's the people that can make the place come alive in a particular way, I felt carried trough time, my world is bigger today, my being has been nourished by this experience.
Cafe is a real bonus, people making efforts accommodate my needs, I am vegan and by magic some tasty vegan sausage rolls were produced, there was vegan ice-cream and a promise of cake coming soon.
Beautiful gardens, plenty of season plants, coulour, wildlife and huge sky, acres of land, forrest, marsh a deer park.
Maybe that's why the observatory is there also. I ve not checked of that is still in use.
The place is accessible on lower ground for wheelchair users, seen ramps but I ve not asked if there is a lift as the tour goes upstairs inside the Castle.
Magic 🏰
Also affordable!
