Just got back from a New Year break at The Burlington at Eastbourne and the hotel has one problem when it is full – lack of space in the public areas. There was entertainment on every night and one night we went downstairs just before 9.00 pm when the bingo was finishing. Absolutely nowhere to sit. Reception could do nothing for us and we ended up back in our room watching old films on the television – something that we could have done at home.

So, if you go at a busy time be prepared to rush your evening meal and make a dash for a decent seat or, as one group of four did, grab a table early on and go for your meals in “shifts”. Don’t automatically assume that you will be able to find a seat for the entertainment because you won’t be guaranteed one.

A special family holiday, which could have gone bad ways, if we let it. We booked 4 rooms in June with agreed special requests and arrived on a Monday afternoon in November to hear that the little refrigerator we had booked for specialised medication should not have been offered by head office telesales and was never available. If we had known this we would have brought our own. I had to go out and buy freezer packs and a chiller box, Reception were kind enough to freeze the packs as required.
At the same time of checking in we were told 2 of our 4 rooms were without hot water as the boiler had broken down that morning and spares were being transported overnight it would be repaired next morning. We being on this special family holiday accepted with grace and washed with cold water that evening and next morning.
On returning after our Tuesday out to find that sadly that part had arrived but now a 2nd part was required which was being transported overnight it would be repaired next morning. This was now become very awkward for my Wife for personal washing etc. But It will be fixed tomorrow so bite the bullet.
On returning after our Wednesday out to find that sadly the urgent part had not arrived but it was being pursued and it would be repaired next morning. I think you might a pattern developing .This now was a major problem for my Wife's personal hygiene. We ask for another room which was unavailable and discovered that 30% of the rooms also did not have hot water, but we could go and use a shower if we wanted to book a time slot, Tomorrow.
On Thursday morning we asked to book a shower and Yes it was available at 17:00 hrs, But won't the boiler be fixed by then I asked ? No reply
On returning after our Thursday out (a pattern had developed) to find that sadly the urgent part had yet again not arrived but it was being pursued and it would be repaired next morning. My Wife was getting very upset about being unable to wash or shower, but we did have a shower booked .......... We asked for the shower key and were told a previous user had not yet returned it. We finally got it 1 1/2 hours later we went to the room which was filthy, we turned around returned the key back to reception. No hot water on the Friday either.
and Now the other bits, the Waiting staff, bar staff and the reception when not reading the "We have no hot water" script were excellent and like many other visitors if you don't get to the entertainment early you will not see or hear a thing.
Following correspondence with Shearings head office we were offered a take it or leave it amount, we took it, but this family will not be using Shearings again.

Been to this Hotel on 3 occasions now, this establishment is excellent cannot fault it has friendly polite staff,Rooms are very nice & comfortable, and the food is first class, we also really enjoyed the nightly entertainment. The prices for this Hotel are very reasonable it's worth paying just a little extra for a stunning sea view,Hotel is owned & run by the Shearings Group & you can book here to come by coach, or drive here yourself parking is available at the hotel for just £5 per night, give it a try well worth it top marks Shearings.

Our Third time at this lovely Hotel.I am the worlds worst packer and emailed to ask about the loan of an ironing board.Reception emailed back to say they would have one in our room when we arrived as I had requested.Brilliant.
We had a great journey down from Normanton in hotel by 5 so time to change for dinner 6.30 to 7.45 each evening breakfast 8 till 8.45.Our room on 4th floor large warm and comfortable.Room 406 overlooking the sea right opposite the lift.We were a bit dubious about this but we weren't disturbed at all.Our waitress was Miriam a very quiet shy but professional girl nothing any bother to her.Dinner was as usual hot and plentiful and the menu the same as other visits.Breakfast choice very good and you could ask for extra.
We were entertained by Mark who was as nice and funny as our other visits. He is such a people person.Well suited to the job.
The Bingo was good .All money paid for the tickets £4 for 6.or £2 a book was given back in prizes nothing was taken out.We enjoyed every nights entertainment and some of the quizzes really good fun. Also if people wanted to dance after the cabaret he would play disco music till 11.30.My only complaint would be the very cold entertainment room you need a cardigan or jacket.Something to do with the ventilation if very windy We had been to Lewes before so didn't go.But went to Battle and Rye trip bu this time of year castle and Abbey shut in Battle and too cold to walk about in Rye.Nice in summer I'm sure but places inside to visit in the winter would be so much better. All in all another lovely break in a hotel whose staff really care. There us a notice which says please tell us straight away if there us a problem and they will do there best to sort it.Will be back.

We were in desperate need of a break and treated ourselves to a weekend at the Burlington which turned into a Faulty Towers fiasco. Having gone to bed early after a long day traveling & sightseeing we found the bathroom flooded. There was a leaking toilet pipe. Staff were fantastic & helped us move from a side room 119 to a front room with fantastic views & promised us some drinks on our last evening. Slept well the first night & then on the 2nd it was the coldest night of the year & a gale force wind wasblowing off the sea straight through the joins of the old sash cord windows. We asked for a heater as I have a very poor circulation problem but there was none available. We had to barricade the windows stuffing them with newspapers and putting bags & cases along the bottom of the lovely thick curtains to prevent the draught coming through. As I was nearest to the window & still felt a draught I slept in a wooly hat, gloves & several jumpers over my nightwear. We were so pleased to be going back the next day to the warmth of our own home. No more breaks for us in the winter!

Another great break here with Shearings. We were greeted by Chris with a lovely smile. The wonderful Mary helped moved the dining tables around so my husband could have his usual spot. The food was great and so too our room overlooking the sea. My only criticism is the bath towels - please can we have bigger ones for the more cuddlier of us??

I cannot understand the good reviews. The hotel is in a good location and is very big. We booked last minute so were not surprised to have a room at the back of the hotel with no view - no problem. However the room was like a sauna (in the middle of January) we decided it must be the radiator was on full so turned it down to off and opened the window (yes it was that hot) decided it would be cool enough by the time we got back from our evening so we could sleep. When we got back it was still like a sauna even with the radiator off, needless to say we did not have a good night's sleep. The next issue was breakfast was only served between 8 and 9 am (on a Sunday!), after no sleep went to breakfast - we had been told the day before when we checked in that we would be shown to our table in the morning. We walked in and no one came to us so I asked one the staff if we could sit anywhere upon which another member of staff started fussing say 'bed and breakfast guests follow me' and we were led to the far end of the restaurant - why I could not tell you - it was a bit Fawlty Towers. My husband had the full breakfast, I had scrambled eggs on toast - but actually it was more like milk blancmange on barely toasted bread which went soggy immediately probably due to the amount of milk in the 'scrambled egg' - I am the least fussy person when it comes to scrambled egg - I have happily eaten scrambled egg my husband would have sent back as overcooked. But surely to be called scrambled egg it should have egg in it! I am sure you will be able to find a better hotel than this. Advertised as having wi-fi - but only in public areas which did not look that welcoming to sit in.
