Great afternoon out. This place has a fascinating history from Roman fort to William the conquerorâs first digs in England to WW2 defences. Well laid out with an informative (and happily concise) audio guide. Well signposted and offers great views of the surrounding countryside.
Even if you donât pay to go inside and see the exhibits (I think itâs worth it) you can walk by and enjoy the exterior.
The woman in charge of the site has lots of info to share, not just on the castle but on other English Heritage sores in the area should you wish to sign up
