Try the medieval art of illumination in this relaxed one-day course at Herstmonceux Castle. Learn to apply and polish real gold leaf, transfer and ink a simple design, and add colour using hand-ground pigments. Inspired by historic herbals, you will create your own finished piece to take home. No experience needed.

Saturday, 25th July from 10:30am to 4:30pm

Illumination is the art of applying gold to paper or vellum, with the resulting artworks traditionally bound within manuscripts. Medieval illuminated manuscripts were highly prized items created by teams of skilled artisans. Herbals were manuscripts detailing plants and their medicinal properties. They were a key part of the medieval manuscript tradition and would aid the effective use of medicinal gardens like the one at Herstmonceux Castle.

In this one-day course, you will learn how to handle, lay and polish 23.75ct gold leaf.  You will be guided through the process of transferring an image onto paper and using ink and fine miniature brushes to ‘ink over’ your design. We will also grind pigments as a group to add colour and tone to our gilded herbals.
