Serving communities across a large rural area of East Sussex, Wealden District Council provides many of the local services that shape everyday life for residents, businesses and visitors in the district. The council operates from its offices in Hailsham and works alongside town and parish councils as well as the county council to deliver services at a district level.

What it is responsible for

Wealden District Council manages a wide range of local functions, including:
• Council tax billing, housing benefit and business rates administration
• Local planning and building control services
• Waste collection and recycling arrangements
• Environmental health and pollution control
• Leisure services, tourism support and community wellbeing
• Car parking and land charges
• Elections and democratic services
• Housing support and licensing services

These responsibilities are typical of a district council and complement county-wide services such as education, transport and social care provided by East Sussex County Council.

Who it serves

Wealden District covers towns including Crowborough, Hailsham, Heathfield, Polegate, Uckfield and Wadhurst, along with surrounding villages and countryside, representing a population of around 160,000 people.

How it works

The council is made up of 45 elected district councillors representing 41 wards, setting local policies, budgets and priorities for services. Meetings, consultations and decisions are published so residents and businesses can stay informed and involved.

Residents and organisations can contact the council via the official Wealden District Council website for service access, reporting issues, applications and support.
